As you read An Introduction to Christian Dance, you will discover why and how we dance. Dance is first and foremost for praising and worshipping God; this is explained from a biblical perspective and by delving deeper into the meanings of the original Hebrew and Greek words for dance, praise and worship. I encourage you to follow the Holy Spirit as He leads you and/or your dance group in your unique expression of worship.
My prayer for each person who works through these chapters is that you will gain a deeper understanding of what it means to dance in praising and worshipping God – spirit, soul, and body!
My journey in dance began at the age of five when my mother signed me up for ballet classes to help correct my feet. For a few years, ballet was my life. My friend and I would make up games and act them out through dance. My childhood dream was to become a prima ballerina, but God had other plans ....
I stopped ballet through my teen years before I learned to dance on pointe, but I never stopped dancing at home – and always in worship.
In 1986, when I was sixteen, I experienced my first Feast of Tabernacles celebration at our church. As a group of young women came dancing in procession down the aisles, my heart leapt with joy, and I knew that this was what I wanted to do. Two years later, I was one of those dancers and the following year, I was heading up the dance group in our church, meeting with a small group each Saturday to dance and study the Word. I spent and sourcing whatever material I could find on dance and Christian dance, which was very little at the time. I also enrolled in the School of Psalmody at our church, where I learned about worship.
In 1992, I had the opportunity to study at the Psalmody Academy in Randburg, a school for worship leaders, and was one of the first students to be trained in Christian dance. It was there that the Lord told me: “I have called you to dance for Me,” and gave me a vision strategy forteaching Christian dance (see Vision Statement). Back home in Cape Town, I was released into full-time dance ministry at my church and started my first Christian dance school.
In 2000, I launched Spirit of Life Dance Ministries and compiled my teaching material into three manuals: An Introduction to Christian Dance, Worship, and Flags and Banners.
In 2022, the Lord released me to officially publish these three manuals as books in a Christian Dance Series along with two more books: Intercession through Dance and Prophetic Dance

An Introduction to Christian Dance will equip and encourage all readers to worship our Lord Jesus with body, spirit, and mind. It reminds us of what it means to: Give all that I am and have, for all that He is. We are all called worship Him in Spirit and in Truth, but what does it mean? Knowing and understanding the full context and studying the references to dance as a form of worship in the Bible, will enable to us to understand the Father’s heart towards worship.
I have known Julaine for the past 23 years and can testify that worship dance is her lifestyle! May worship become your lifestyle too as you work and pray through An Introduction to Christian Dance. - Melissa Du Preez
